The existence of aritsts is quite special. Artists are more sensitive and full of emotions in recognizing things. They deeply think of all the data from outside, or feelings and emotions from inside, by reflecting them against the existence of human beings anew. It is quite different from ordinary people who focus their full attention on their day-to-day living or how much they can enjoy life. That’s why artists can win admiration from people. They delve deep into the root of life just as religion does.
Even in the feudal age when social classes were strictly divided and common people were looked down upon by aristocrats, there were artists from ordinary people who gained high esteem. Perhaps, it was one of the few ways to enhance themselves against the aristocratic class, and it still holds true in this democratic age.
If so, artists need to be more relaxed. For they can win admiration from people as lofty persons in quest for nobleness, totally different from worldly people who have only money on their mind. Most of artists are not well-off because they spend more money for attaining a high level of artistic achievement, paying little attention to make money, and because this is the world that the rich seems to be getting richer while the poor poorer.
It is a tough environment for artists to get along, but as long as artists feel relaxed about people and things around as they are special and, if they take pride in their exchanging money for admiration, life as an artist would be regarded as a good one.
예술가라는 존재는 상당히 특별한 존재이다. 사물을 인지하는 감각이 더 많이 예민하고, 그것에 대해 느끼는 감정이 더 풍부하다. 그리고 외부로부터 들어오는 정보에 대해서, 그리고 자신의 내면에서 나오는 감정에 대해서, 인간의 존재를 그것과 대비하기 위해 생각한다. 보통사람은 하루하루의 먹고 사는 문제와 얼마나 더 삶을 즐기는 문제에 대해서 집중하는 것과는 다르다. 이런 점이 예술가를 존중하도록 만든다. 마치 종교처럼 삶의 근원을 파고들게 만드는 매력적인 것이다.
과거의 봉건시대, 신분의 계급이 분명하여 평민이 귀족에게 천대 받던 시대에도 존경받는 예술가들이 있었다. 어쩌면 평민이 귀족계급에 대항하여 자신을 높일 수 있는 몇 안되는 방법이었을 것이고, 지금의 민주주의 시대에도 그것은 유효하다.
그렇다면 예술가는 좀 더 여유로울 필요가 있다. 돈만 아는 속물이라는 그룹보다는 인간의 고귀함을 추구하는 고상한 존재라는 존경을 받으니까 말이다. 예술가가 대부분 가난한 것은 돈 버는 것을 추구하기보다는 높은 수준의 예술적 성취를 위해서 오히려 돈을 더 많이 소모하기 때문이고, 그곳이 빈익빈 부익부가 가장 심한 세계이기 때문일 것이다.
예술가가 살아가기에 많이 힘든 환경이지만 예술가는 특별하기 때문에 주변 사람들에게 여유롭게 대한다면, 돈과 존경을 맞바꾸었다고 자부심을 갖는다면, 그것도 훌륭한 삶이라고 평가되어 질 것이다.
